Truecaller Launches 'Family Protection' to Shield Relatives from Scam Calls

Award Winning

Truecaller has introduced a significant new feature called Family Protection, fundamentally shifting the responsibility of digital safety from the individual to the household unit. Built directly into the Truecaller application for both Android and iOS, this feature allows users to create a trusted family group of up to five members, providing a shared safety net against the rising tide of sophisticated phone scams. The core aim of the feature is simple but powerful: to empower a more tech-savvy individual, often referred to as the "Family Admin," to easily manage and configure scam-blocking settings for their less-savvy loved ones.

The mechanism is centered around the designated Family Admin, who gains an unprecedented level of remote control over the group's protection settings. The Admin can set the group-wide level of spam protection (from Basic to Max), manage a shared blocklist of unwanted numbers, and guide how incoming calls are filtered. For users on the Android platform, this control is significantly enhanced, as the Admin can receive real-time alerts when a group member receives a potential scam call, see status signals like battery level and phone activity, and, critically, remotely end the fraudulent call to prevent fraud attempts in progress.

This proactive approach is a strategic evolution for Truecaller, moving beyond its traditional role of mere call identification and notification. Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala noted that as scam tactics evolve, criminals are increasingly targeting entire families, looking for the "weakest link" through sequential calls or messages. By making protection a shared experience, Family Protection is designed to create a collective defense mechanism, ensuring that elderly parents or children who might be vulnerable to high-pressure fraud tactics have an immediate layer of defense managed by a trusted relative.

While the core functionality of Family Protection is offered free of charge to all users, it is also positioned as a key driver for engagement and premium subscriptions. Families who desire a stronger, ad-free experience can upgrade to the Truecaller Premium Family plan, which covers up to five members. This premium tier includes advanced features like automatic rejection of high-risk numbers and more robust spam filtering, aligning with the company’s strategic goal of growing recurring revenues and encouraging long-term user stickiness by offering a higher level of peace of mind.

The rollout of Family Protection is commencing in a phased approach, initially launching in pilot markets, including Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, and Kenya. Truecaller has confirmed that the feature will be expanded to its largest user base, including India, by the first quarter of 2026. This measured deployment allows the company to gather user feedback and refine the feature before its broader global launch, demonstrating Truecaller's commitment to making digital communication safer and more efficient for its over 450 million active users worldwide.
