Ethiopian Airlines Bets Big on Long Haul with Order for Nine Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Award Winning

On January 20, 2026, Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most successful carrier, announced a significant expansion of its widebody fleet with a firm order for nine Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Finalized in late December 2025, the deal underscores the airline's aggressive "Vision 2035" strategy, which aims to nearly double its current fleet over the next decade. By adding these high-efficiency jets, Ethiopian continues to solidify its position as a global aviation powerhouse, connecting its Addis Ababa hub to high-demand intercontinental markets with greater frequency and fuel efficiency.

The Boeing 787-9 variant has become the workhorse of Ethiopian's long-haul network, prized for its ability to reduce fuel use and carbon emissions by 25% compared to the older aircraft it replaces. These nine new jets will be used to bolster existing routes and open new nonstop links to Europe, North America, and Asia. Group CEO Mesfin Tasew emphasized that the order is a critical component of the airline's sustainability roadmap, ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of environmental commitments as the carrier transitions to a younger, more technologically advanced fleet.

This latest acquisition is part of a larger 20-aircraft finalization with Boeing, which also includes 11 additional 737 MAX 8 jets. These narrowbody aircraft are intended for the airline’s dense intra-African network, providing a seamless feeder system that funnels passengers from across the continent into the long-haul Dreamliner flights departing from Ethiopia. Together, the 20-plane package represents one of the largest single commitments to Boeing from an African airline in recent years, highlighting the deep-rooted 75-year partnership between the manufacturer and the carrier.

Strategically, the timing of the Dreamliner deliveries—scheduled between 2031 and 2033—aligns perfectly with the projected opening of the Bishoftu International Mega Airport City. This massive $6 billion infrastructure project is designed to handle up to 100 million passengers annually, eventually replacing the capacity-constrained Bole International Airport. By securing widebody delivery slots now, Ethiopian is ensuring it has the hardware necessary to inhabit its future mega-hub and compete head-to-head with Middle Eastern giants like Emirates and Qatar Airways.

Passenger experience is also at the heart of this fleet push. Along with the new aircraft, Ethiopian and Boeing have entered a services collaboration to retrofit the airline’s existing 787 fleet. The upgrades will feature the latest in-flight entertainment systems and new lie-flat business-class seats from Adient Aerospace. By standardizing its "Cloud Nine" premium experience across both new and older Dreamliners, the airline aims to maintain its reputation as the preferred choice for business travelers flying into and out of the African continent.

The order also signals a strategic balancing act between aircraft manufacturers. While Ethiopian continues to be a loyal Boeing customer, it recently placed orders for the Airbus A350-1000, the largest variant of Airbus’s widebody family. By operating a diverse fleet that includes the 787-9 for "long and thin" routes and the A350 for high-capacity trunk routes, Ethiopian maintains maximum operational flexibility. This dual-source strategy allows the airline to optimize its network based on passenger load and range requirements, ensuring no market is left underserved.

As the airline industry moves deeper into 2026, Ethiopian Airlines remains a rare example of consistent, profitable growth in a volatile market. With a backlog that now includes the 737 MAX, the 787-9, and the upcoming 777X, the carrier is well-positioned to remain the "Gateway to Africa." For passengers, this means more nonstop options and modern cabins; for the competition, it is a clear signal that the "Lion of Africa" has no intention of slowing down its global conquest.
