Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. Developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at a cost exceeding ₹5,640 crore, this greenfield project marks a monumental milestone for the state's infrastructure and economic landscape.

Built to anchor the growing Visakhapatnam metropolitan and North Andhra regions, the newly minted airport combines state-of-the-art engineering with deep regional cultural roots. Its striking terminal architecture draws inspiration from the movement of a "flying fish" and local landscapes, paying homage to the Bay of Bengal's maritime heritage.

In its initial phase, the facility is engineered to comfortably manage 6 million passengers annually. However, comprehensive future-proof master planning allows for scalability up to 40 million passengers per year. The airport is equipped with next-generation innovations, including biometric passenger processing, AI-driven operations, and a robust 3,800-metre Code-E runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330.

Beyond passenger travel, the infrastructure positions North Andhra as a powerhouse for logistics and international trade. The complex features a dedicated cargo terminal with a capacity of 25,000 metric tonnes per year, complete with temperature-controlled cold-chain units designed to seamlessly boost the export of pharmaceuticals and perishable marine goods.

Reflecting a commitment to green growth, the airport incorporates an extensive array of eco-friendly elements. These include an on-site 5 MW solar power plant, highly efficient HVAC systems, intelligent building management, and advanced rainwater harvesting mechanisms designed to recycle a significant portion of daily operational water requirements.

The inauguration of the airport was accompanied by the launch and foundation-stone laying of wider state development projects totaling nearly ₹18,000 crore. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the central government is pushing regional progress at "double speed," spotlighting extensive railway initiatives and noting that India's total operational airports have surged from 74 to 166 over the past 12 years.

With the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) aerodrome license secured, all systems are officially greenlit for takeoff. Commercial flight operations out of the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport are scheduled to commence on August 17, setting the stage for an unprecedented wave of tourism, industrial investment, and employment generation across Andhra Pradesh.

Beyond the core aviation infrastructure, the master plan for the Bhogapuram project incorporates a massive economic ecosystem designed to transform the region into a multi-faceted hub. Alongside the primary airport zone spanning over 2,200 acres, the integrated development encompasses a dedicated 500-acre aviation hub and a 136-acre aviation university and EduCity. This forward-thinking layout is tailored to foster specialized skill development, aerospace research, and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, creating a steady stream of high-value technical employment for the youth of Andhra Pradesh.

The grand inauguration ceremony itself drew immense public celebration, highlighted by a historic cultural showcase. More than 13,000 students and tribal artists performed the traditional Dhimsa dance, setting a Guinness World Record for the largest performance of its kind. Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the vibrant display as a moving testament to the warmth of the local community and paid tribute to the airport's namesake, the legendary freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, noting that naming the facility after a tribal hero bridges deep historical reverence with modern national progress.

Looking further ahead, state leadership and central authorities anticipate that the airport will trigger a massive boom in the hospitality, real estate, and tourism sectors. Proximity to key regional attractions such as the hill station of Araku Valley, Lambasingi, and coastal tourism corridors will become significantly more accessible for international and domestic travelers. Coupled with upcoming industrial corridors and semiconductor initiatives, the Bhogapuram airport stands ready to cement Visakhapatnam and the wider North Andhra region as economic heavyweights on India’s east coast.
