Lufthansa has officially entered its most historic year to date, celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding on January 6, 1926. To mark this centenary, the German flag carrier has deployed its state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet to a strategic network of 11 cities across six countries this January. Leading this global tour is the newly delivered flagship, registered as D-ABPU and named "Berlin," which features a stunning "Super Crane" anniversary livery—a deep-blue fuselage where the iconic crane's wings span across the aircraft's own wings.
The January 2026 schedule highlights Lufthansa's commitment to the North American market, with five key gateways receiving regular Dreamliner service from Frankfurt. Passengers flying to Austin (AUS), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Newark (EWR), Detroit (DTW), and Toronto (YYZ) can now experience the "Dreamliner effect," characterized by larger windows, lower cabin altitude, and higher humidity, all of which work together to significantly reduce the physical toll of long-haul travel.
South America remains a vital pillar of the Dreamliner’s winter rotation, with the fleet serving the vibrant hubs of Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and Bogotá (BOG). These long-range routes are the perfect showcase for the 787-9’s efficiency, consuming nearly 30% less fuel than previous generation aircraft. For travelers heading to the southern hemisphere, the Dreamliner provides a noticeably quieter cabin, allowing for a more restful transition across time zones.
The Asian expansion continues with daily and multi-weekly flights to Mumbai (BOM) and Hyderabad (HYD). As India’s tech and financial sectors grow, Lufthansa is utilizing the Dreamliner to provide consistent, premium capacity to the subcontinent. These routes are increasingly featuring the highly anticipated Allegris cabin interior, which offers passengers a choice of five different Business Class seats, including suites with chest-high walls for ultimate privacy.
Lufthansa’s footprint in Africa is also getting a Dreamliner boost this month with service to Lagos (LOS) and Nairobi (NBO). These routes highlight the versatility of the 787-9, which is capable of handling the unique hot-and-high conditions of African hubs while maintaining the high standards of comfort expected by the airline’s corporate and leisure travelers alike. The January schedule ensures that these emerging markets remain seamlessly connected to the European heartland.
Central to this month’s operations is the rollout of the Allegris experience. While not every 787 in the 12-aircraft fleet is yet equipped with the new cabin, January 2026 marks a major milestone where the majority of Dreamliner flights out of Frankfurt now feature the upgraded seats. From the Extra Space Seat in Business Class to the ergonomic Premium Economy shells, the airline is using its 100th year to redefine what luxury looks like at 35,000 feet.
As Lufthansa looks toward its second century, the Boeing 787-9 serves as a bridge between a storied past and a sustainable future. The "Berlin" flagship, with its "1926 | 2026" markings, will spend the month as a flying ambassador, visiting each of these 11 cities to showcase the airline's resilience and innovation. For passengers, the message is clear: the next 100 years of German aviation have officially taken flight, and the journey is smoother and more sustainable than ever before.
